We’re reaching out with news about a significant upgrade happening north of us on the Hannegan Rd. Whatcom County Public Works is gearing up for round about contraction at the intersection at E. Smith Road and Hannegan Road this spring and summer.

Starting May 28, the area will undergo a transformation aimed at making your commute smoother and safer. Here’s what you can expect from this exciting project:

1. Better Traffic Flow: We’ve all experienced the frustration of gridlock at busy intersections. With the introduction of a multi-lane roundabout, traffic flow will improve, reducing those dreaded delays and making your journey more efficient.

2. Safety Upgrades: Your safety is our top priority. By minimizing conflicts between different types of road users, such as pedestrians, cyclists, and drivers, these improvements will create a safer environment for everyone traversing this intersection.

3. Dedicated Spaces: We’re thrilled to announce the addition of dedicated pedestrian and cyclist facilities, providing a safe haven for walkers and bikers alike. It’s all about making our roads more accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

• May 2024: Utility work will kick off on weekdays around the project site.
• May 28 – Early July: Construction will be underway, with single-lane closures causing some delays. But trust us, it’ll be worth it in the end!
• Early July – Early August: The intersection will undergo a 25-day full closure between July 8 and August 7. Don’t worry; we’ll make sure you know exactly where to go with a clearly marked detour.
